The Dash Spat

£12.00

Spats are worn over your boots or shoes to protect them from dirt, mud and scuffs and were popular in the 19th century. Commonly at the time they would feature leather straps, full button closure and be made of tough hard wearing fabric. They are worn with the closure facing outwards on each foot. This modernised pattern features elastic worn under the boot, Velcro closure and faux buttons to decorate. They are also unlined making this project much quicker.

Spats, (originally called Spatterdash or Spatter Guards) originated as a military item but spread into civilian Dre’s reaching a high of popularity in the early 20th century.

The pattern is in three sizes as follows

S - UK mens 6-8

M - UK mens 9-10

L - UK mens 11-12

It may be worth making a mock up first to check the size chosen will fit your particular make and style of boots. You can use any cheap or scrap fabric for this, just to check the fit over your foot wear. Make sure you put the boot on before testing as empty boots can sit differently.

You will need

0.25 meter of fabric

10 x small buttons

10 inches of sew on velcro (3/4 inch wide)

12 inch of elastic

Suitable fabrics are cotton twill, coating or suiting wool fabric, denim and other non stretch strong stable fabrics.

Seam allowance - 1.5 cm throughout which is included in all pattern pieces
